Miniature “Architectural Rose” Graphite and Watercolor on parchment 4x4in
An architectural rose is a classic bit of detail work applied to construction for embellishment.
The detail is usually about the size of a life-size rose, suggests radiating petals, but is not necessarily a floral design. It is usually made of stone or wood to match its environment inside or outside a building. You will see them on most classic older buildings, the design repeated, for example, over and over, at the top or center or base of a supporting column, or along the border of floor, ceiling or wall panel. This one is from historic St.Patrick & St.Anthony R.C.Church in Hartford, Connecticut, the state’s oldest church. At 4x4inches it frames and hangs easily for fine effect.
