“Mill on the Hill”

Watercolor on Paper

11x14inches in 15x18inch mat and frame

2013

This is an historic site, and especially striking at Dawn, as in this image, and at sunset, when the three-state view gives off a light coral glow. This is the Daniel Mill in Rockville, or Vernon Rockville Connecticut - my old studio, with waterfall view, is just out of the picture, on the left three floors up. It is one of a strand of 13+ such mills along the Hockanum River. Tiny Connecticut, my home state, is the nursery of America, thanks to mills like this, run by water power, that machined the things we needed to manage without shipments from “across the pond”. And so empowered our FREEDOM - a new nation.

Its story is tied to that of nearby Capitol City, Hartford Connecticut’s Charter Oak. We knew we were doing fine and making money with these mills, so England wanted to own us again - but when England’s representative tried to take our Charter of Freedom, an early patriot snuffed the candles and ran out the Tavern meeting room door and stashed it in a crevice of a nearby mighty oak, till it was safe to return it to its Archive. The Tree became a holy symbol to patriots, and the Mills went on to be tops in the World, till the crash of 29 and cheap imports reduced its stature and necessitated huge expansions further west to keep up a leading spot, which we do till this very day.
You’ll see the Oak Tree and Oak Leaf icon used as very specially, here and there. The oak lived on for another century when it was lost in a fire, the site still marked reverently and the Descendants/Scions of the Mighty Oak encircle our State Capitol Building today……………..but that’s another story and another painting.
